Background information of Kaushalendra Kumar:
By nominating grassroots worker Kaushalendra Kumar from Nalanda Lok Sabha seat, Nitish Kumar had sought had to deflate the criticism he recieved for denying a ticket to veteran socialist George Fernandes. Kumar is a fellow Kurmi, a OBC and a surprise entry. A resident of Islampur block in Nalanda, he was hardly known outside the district. Once a trusted lieutenant of Fernandes, he did not even possess a bicycle when got Lok Sabha ticket in 2009. Interestingly he could not clear his BA (Economics Hons) examination after which he took active interest in politics in various parts of the district. Kumar is father of two sons and a daughter. His eldest son now studies in IIT Roorkee. Kaushalendra’s wife is also in politics having won zila parishad election. She secured more than 11,500 votes to become the parishad member. The family’s main source of income is a few acres of agricultural land at their native village.
