An eminent doctor, and tribal leader, Baske began his political career at the local zilla parishad (top tier of the district panchayati raj system). In 1998, he was made Chairman of the Midnapore Zilla Parishad. According to sources, qualified doctors and teachers are well recieved by the Communist Party, and therefore, a lot of MP’s from Bengal are either doctors or teachers.
