Background information of Prof. Ranjan Prasad Yadav:
He was a cabinet member in the Patna University Student’s Union in 1967, and also participated in the JP movement. He was a socialist leader and served as a functionary of the Janta Dal for a long time. He then joined the RJD. When in July 1997, Laloo Prasad Yadav had to step down as Chief Minister of Bihar, it was expected that he would be succeeded Prof. Ranjan Prasad Yadav. Instead of choosing Ranjan Prasad Yadav as his successor, Laloo chose his wife Rabri Devi, who was semi-literate. Ranjan subsequently broke off to join JD (U). A geologist by training, he is credited with having groomed Laloo in politics. Dr Ranjan Prasad Yadav retired as a Reader in the Geology department, and was placed in charge of higher education when Laloo was in power in the state.
