He started his career as a councilor of Contai municipality in 1990. Following his father’s footsteps, he contested Assembly elections from Kontai (south) in 2006 and won. Suvendu wanted to be a monk and before joining politics, he was closely associated with Ramakrishna Mission. He has three criminal cases pending but the MP insists that he is completely inncocent, nor has he been convicted. Suvendu is credited as the man who galvanised the people of Nandigram under the umbrella of the Bhumi Ucched Pratirodh Committee when land acquisition for a chemical hub triggered a movement in the region. His father Sisir Adhikari is also an MP. He has serious charges of cruelty and intent to outrage a woman’s modesty.
