A senior Congress leader, Bapiraju got elected to State Assembly for five terms from 1978 to 1998. However, he failed to win elections thereafter and was made a member of the Legislative Council in 2007. He got elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time in 2009. YSR gave him the ticket to Parliament after another senior Congress leader Harirama Jogaiah quit the party to join the newly formed PRP.
