Background information of Daggubati Purandeswari:
Presently Junior HRD Minister in the UPA Government, Purandreshwari is the daughter of TDP founder N T Rama Rao. She, along with husband Daggubati Venkateshwara Rao, joined the Congress in 2004. She is the first women in NTR’s family to enter electoral politics. She won from the Bapatla Lok Sabha seat in 2004 and was made a Union Minister of State for HRD in January 2006. Due to delimitation of seats, she shifted to Visakhapatnam seat in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections. A double graduate in literature and gemology, she authored a book ‘In quest of Utopia’. Highly respected among political circles, she is said to be close to Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, and an arch rival to TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu, who was responsible for dethroning her father and then sidelining her husband.
