His political career began when he was elected General Secretary of Asutosh College in 1957. The following years saw him lead bodies such as the Undivided Bengal Student’s Federation. However, his stock as a politician only began to rise when he started leading trade unions. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 1985. Despite being an MP, he continues to be an active trade unionist and is a member of CITU, the party’s labour wing.
