Born to a farmer in Garhwa, Kameshwar cleared his matriculation examination in 1975, and then decided against college and headed for the jungles to join the People’s War Group instead. He quickly rose up the ranks and became the Palamau head of the outfit. Police records show that Kameshwar has been an active Maoist since 1984. His expertise in explosives and mines meant that he rose rapidly to the rank of zonal commander. He is the only elected Maoist in Lok Sabha and is currently in custody at Rohtas district jail in Bihar. He was labelled a ‘dreaded Maoist commander’ in Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh. He won the election while in custody, without even campaigning in person. He still has a Rs 500,000 reward on his head announced by the three state governments.
