Kirti is a second generation politician. His father Bhagwat Jha Azad was a senior Congress leader and chief minister of Bihar. However Kirti joined the BJP. Kirti is also a well known cricketer having represented India at international level. He was member of the Indian cricket team which won the World Cup in England in 1983. Kirti comes from an elite upper caste family.
