Background information of Palaniappan Chidambaram:
Born into an illustrious family, Chidambaram entered active politics in his student days and was the President of the Tamil Nadu wing of the Youth Congress in 1972. He was first elected to the Lok Sabha in 1984, believed to have been granted a ticket by Rajiv Gandhi who was then inducting the educated elite into active politics. While playing crucial role in national politics he has been trying to keep a touch with the electorate in his constituency. Along with later Congress leader GK Moopanar, he formed a breakaway group called Tamil Maanial Congress, protesting the AICC decision to align with Jayalalithaa led AIADMK in 1996.
