Background information of Ponnam Prabhakar:

First time MP P Prabhakar is a grassroots politician. He was in the National Students Union of India (NSUI – Congress Students Wing) He failed to get a party ticket (nomination) from the Karimnagar Asssembly seat in 2004 elections but contested as an Independent candidate against very senior Congress leader M S Reddy and lost. He was expelled from the Congress for indiscipline; but the expulsion was revoked due to his close association with the AP Congress Committee president D Srinivas. YSR Reddy gave him a new lease of life by nominating him as APMARKFED (Agricultural Cooperative Body) Chairman. He rejoined the Congress and was nominated from the Karimnagar Lok Sabha seat in 2009. The seat was represented by TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) between 2004 and 2009. However, KCR changed his seat to Mahabubnagar and consequently Prabhakar emerged as the most powerful candidate and won.
