His father Kamada Kinkar Mukherjee was a well-known freedom fighter, who went on to become a member of the West Bengal Legislative Council,a nd later President of the District Congress Committee of Birbhum. Mukherjee worked as a college teacher and a journalist, and began his parliamentary career from the Rajya Sabha in 1969.
